On the occasion of Meatless Day , the Indian animal community has reminded the prime minister of his poll promise of rolling back the “pink revolution” – a phrase used to describe the meat industry.
Indian Animal Activists Remind PM Modi of his poll promise...!
India is one of the fastest growing meat consumers in the world, and also emerging as the world’s biggest beef exporter. A spokesperson of the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) said “ Successive governments have encouraged meat production and export – leading to the untold misery for millions of animals. We have been filled with hope that the new government will reverse this trend.”
Globally, Meat production is the leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions as well as other forms of environmental pollution. Further, with industrialization of livestock, fertile agricultural land is being diverted to grow fodder for animals. Recent research in India has brought to light high levels of anti biotic residue in chicken meat, further exacerbating fears of the human cost of animal farming.
Representing the Indian animal protection community, FIAPO has appealed to the PM to keep his poll promise and steer the country away from increasing meat production. This would benefit not just animals, but large number of small farmers as well as environmental conservation.
FIAPO is India's apex animal protection organization. As the collective voice of the animal protection movement in India, FIAPO is the catalyst that protects the interests of animals on local and national levels - through education, research, lobbying, mobilization, training and direct action. Created for the movement, by the movement, FIAPO is India’s only national federation. It has more than 60 members and over 200 supporter organizations across the country.
