Fish breeding improves economic condition of Ram Nagar's people

Economic condition of 30 people of village Ram Nagar in Ashok Nagar district has improved through their untiring efforts, hard work, passion and assistance provided by Water Sector Restructuring Project.

About five years ago, 30 people of the village formed Indira Fishermen’s Cooperative Society. After getting the society registered with Janpad Panchayat, a reservoir was hired on Rs. 7,950 lease. Due to dedication of society’s members, assistance worth Rs. 1 lakh 70 thousand was provided to society for purchasing nets, boats, insulated boxes, weighing balance sets, fish seeds, fingerlings etc. along with transport.

After getting assistance from World Bank project, the society produced 3900 MT fish for 2 years and earned net profit of Rs. 2 lakh 54 thousand. In year 2012, they produced 5600 MT fish from the reservoir and earned Rs. 3 lakh 36 thousand. Generally, 63 kg per hectare fish used to be produced in Ram Nagar reservoir, which has been increased to 91 kg per hectare now. The society released 80 thousand fingerlings in the reservoir during year 2012-13 from which 135 kg per hectare fish was produced. Due to improvement in financial condition, the society members have constructed pucca houses and many of them are educating their children in good schools.
