Eligibility for red and yellow beacons on vehicles


Transport Department issues orders

Transport Department has issued orders with regard to installation of red and yellow beacons on the top front part of vehicles. As per orders, only eligible persons can use these beacons.

Exercising power vested in it under the rules of Central Motor Vehicle Act-1989, the Transport Department has according permission by accommodating all previous notifications. As per it, red beacon can be installed when vehicle is on duty in the state. Those eligible for it include the Governor, the Chief Minister, Chief Justice, Vidhan Sabha Speaker, Ministers, Ministers of State, Leader of Opposition, Lokayukta and Chairman of Human Rights Commission.

Similarly, those eligible for yellow beacons include judges of High Court, Chief Secretary/equivalent officer, DGP/ equivalent officer, Divisional Commissioners (in their respective areas), Regional IG (in their respective areas), collector/additional collector (In their respective districts), SP and ASP (In their respective districts) amd SDO (Revenue)/SDM, SDOP/CSP (In their respective sub-divisions).

As per orders issued today, purple glass red revolving beacon will be used as top flasher in ambulances and blue beacon will be used in vehicle escorting VIPs who are entitled for red beacon. Red, blue and yellow beacons will not be used in vehicles when eligible persons are not travelling in them and will be covered with black cover. Officers entitled for yellow beacon will have to paste certificate issued by competent authority (Regional Transport Officer) on the windscreens of their vehicles.
